Welcome back!

Hello Rio Families! I'm sad to say that I will not be teaching 3 rd grade this year. I'm still at Rio but am going to be a parttime reading intervention teacher. This year I get the opportunity to spend more time off with my own little boys. Eli is 4 years old now and Nico will be 2 in November. I hope your children have a wonderful 1st week back and I'm sure I will be seeing a lot of you around school.

Sincerely, Mrs. Maraldo

3rd grade party

Hello Parents! Just a friendly reminder that this Wednesday is our 3rd grade carnival. It will begin at 10 and go until around 12:15. If you have $5.00 to donate towards food that would be great. Please feel free to come and enjoy the party with us. Be sure your child wears sunscreen as we will be outside all day. Again, it's been a wonderful year with your kids and I hope you all have a terrific summer!

May 28-June 7

Hello Room 21 Families! With the year winding down, I'd like to thank each and everyone of you for all the support, help, donations... that you have contributed this year. It always amazes me what a wonderful community we have here at Rio.

This week there will be no spelling packet, Only nightly math until Friday and that's all the homework for third grade. We will be finishing up long division this week, RTI, and the Solar System. Please return any library books that your child may still have. If any books are not turned in or paid for, I have to hold your child's report card in the office until they are turned in.

Our end of the year party is on Wednesday June 5 from 9:00-12:15. It us a carnival theme that will be held on the upper playground. We are hoping for a $5.00 donation per child to cover the cost of the food. If yiu would like to donate any food or drinks, please let me know.

Also, if you ordered a yearbook for your child they will be handed out next Monday, June 3rd.

Thank you again for all you do and have a wonderful summer!

Sincerely, Athena Maraldo

May 13-17, 2013

Hope you are all having a fabulous Mother's Day!

CST testing finished last week, Hurray! So, we are back to our normal schedule.  RTI resumes this week and will continue through the last week in May. A homework packet with a spelling page and reading log will go home Monday and is due Friday. We have finished the HM Language Arts so the spelling list will look different the next 2 weeks. There is no math in the packet because we are finishing up Rhyme's and Times. These sheets are attached to the nightly math homework.

Kids had a wonderful time on the field trip last Friday. Thanks to all the parents who drove and came along. Also, this Thursday evening, May 16,  is Open House. Hope you can make it!

Enjoy the rest of your day.

April 29-May 3, 2013

Hello Room 21 families! California State Testing (CST's) begins this week for grades 2-6. Please be sure your child arrives to school on time and has a nice breakfast. We will be testing in the morning and will be done by lunch time at 11:30. There will be NO spelling packet for the next 2 weeks. Only a reading log and nightly math page. We are beginning a program called "rhymes and times" that has little "boogies" for each fact. It is supposed to be a fun way to remember the facts. So an additional multiplication page will be attached to the HM math homework.

A big THANK YOU to all who came out and supported the children during jogging for the arts. It's always fun to see how much effort the kids put forth (and parents) for such a good cause.

Our field trip to the Agricultural History Museum is coming up on May 10. Please sure to fill out the form and send it in soon.

Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!

April 22-26, 2013

Hello room 21 families! This week's homework packet for Ramona Quimby will be due on Friday the 26th. It is the last packet before CSTs next week. We will begin testing the week of April 29 through May 8. We will also begin measurement and capacity in math while reviewing multiplication. We began the Solar System in science and will continue that the next few weeks.

Our field trip to the Agricultural History Museum is on May 10.  This is a fun trip and the last one in 3rd grade. Please be sure your driver paperwork is in if you plan on being a chaperone.

It's supposed to be a beautiful weekend, so enjoy!

April 15-19, 2013

Happy Spring! This weeks packet for Poppa's New Pants will be due on Friday, April 19. We will also finish up multiplying larger numbers and have a quiz later in the week. A field trip form to the Agricultural History Museum on Friday, May 10th will be sent home. With the new legislation, we are not allowed to ask for money for field trips. But, if you can send in $5.00 donation towards the museum, that would be great. If we do not have the sufficient funds to go, then donations will be sent back home with your child.

Thank you for all you do and the support this year. Can't believe it's winding down. State testing will begin the last week in April/first week in May. I'll give another heads up when it gets closer.

Have a great weekend!

April 8-12, 2013

Hello all! Your children did a wonderful job on their Famous American speeches. Each year I am impressed with how well the students do. I'm very proud of them! When we return from Spring Break a spelling packet for Pepita Talks Twice will be sent home and is due on Friday April 12. We will also have our daily math focusing on multiplication of larger numbers. We are going to "launch" into space with a science unit covering our Solar System. This is a fun one filled with many art and writing activities.

As the year winds down, please remind students of rules and that we still have 2 months of learning to go. CST testing will begin the week of April 29 to May 10.

Have a WONDERFUL spring break!

March 25-29, 2013

Hello Room 21 Families! Our focus this week is getting our Famous American speeches behind us. I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing your children (hopefully in costume) on Monday and Tuesday. A letter was sent home 2 weeks ago with a schedule and rubric attached. Please practice with your child this weekend. We will NOT have a homework packet this week, only nightly math homework. I'm sure the kids will be happy about that.

In math, we are finishing decimals and money and moving toward 2-3 digit multiplication. A weekly multiplication facts quiz is given on Fridays. Many kids are making progress, but still need to practice the automaticity of facts.

Thank you to Mrs. Horton for supplying the class with LOTS of pencils and wipes. They are always much appreciated.

Have a wonderful Spring Break!

March 18-22, 2013

Hello parents! The packet for Trapped by the Ice will go home Monday and is due Friday. A reminder that Famous American Speeches will be held the following Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26. Please be sure your child practices at home and is well prepared. As mentioned in my letter, you are more than welcome to watch your child give his/her  speech to the class. If you have any questions about the presentation, please email me.

A letter written by your child was sent home last week (3/13) regarding playground rules. Spring Fever is in full bloom and many students have forgotten, or shall I say "are not following the playground rules." All 3rd grade classes discussed the rules during PE and wrote them down to review with you and sign.

If you have any wipes or pencils, they would be greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful weekend!

March 11-15, 2013

A big thank you to all the parents who drove on the field trip. We have one more coming up in May, so if you didn't get a chance to join us, you can come along then.

This week's packet for Yunmi and Halmoni's trip will go home Monday and is due on Friday. Last week, students were finishing up their speeches is class. Most of them were sent home Thursday or Friday either finished or not. Those who finished their final draft should begin practicing their speech. Those who did not will need to be finished at home. A letter was sent home last week which included a scoring rubric as well as schedule. Speeches will be held Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26.

Reports cards will also go home this Friday. In the reading/ELA section you will find an AR score. These scores are not the tell all for where your child is, it is more of a range. This trimester grades were based on their performance in RTI.

That's all for now. Have a great weekend and please send in pencils if you can.

March 4-8, 2013

Hello! Can't believe March is here already. This is the last week of trimester 2, so report cards will go home next week. Only a few more months of 3rd grade to go. Students have been working on their famous American reports/ speeches. We'll continue to work on them this week in class and then they'll be sent home. Speeches will be on Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26. Kids signed up last week when they wanted to give their speech, so a copy of the schedule will go home the end of the week.

The spelling packet for Across the Wide Dark Sea will be due this Friday. In math we are continuing with fractions and will move into decimals. A multiplication quiz from 0-6 is given once a week. Usually in Fridays. Most kids have a good grasp of the basic facts but get stuck on 7s and 8s.

Our field trip to the Museum of Art History is this Friday, March 8. If you are a driver/chaperone please be at Rio by 8:45. Our tour begins at 9:30. Ttraffic can be unpredictable at that time, so 45 minutes should give us plenty if time.

Have a great weekend!
Wish list: pencils:)

Feb. 19-22, 2012

Hello! Thank you for all of the "sweet" Valentine's from you and your children. I felt the love!

This weeks spelling packet for Two Days in May was sent home last week and is due Friday, Feb 22. We will have a spelling test on those words. Please be sure both reading logs are filled out.

This week we will also dive into biographies. Students will print out a kid friendly article about their famous American in the computer lab on Tuesday and we will begin writing our speeches. Most work will be done in class over the next 2 weeks. Some kids may need additional help at home. If needed, I'll send the outline home with those children. Oral presentations will be held on Monday March 25 and Tuesday March 26. A sign up sheet will be passed around class in a few weeks and then sent home. You are more than welcome to come observe your child giving his/her speech. I will send a letter and scoring rubric home soon as well.

We also have a field trip coming up on Friday, March 8. Please send in the permission form and $2.00 for the cost. I have plenty of drivers at this time. If you need a new form, please let me know.

Have a wonderful 3 day weekend!

Feb. 5- Feb.15, 2013

Hello! I apologize that this update is a bit late. Here are the upcoming events for this week and next.

A spelling packet for Seal Surfer went home Monday and is due this Friday, Feb. 8. We will have a spelling test on Friday. We will continue with division facts through this week and will have a unit test sometime next week covering the 3 division chapters.

Since the next 2 Mondays are holidays, a spelling packet for Two Days in May will go home on Tuesday, Feb. 12 and won't be due until Friday, Feb. 22. (students will have 2 weeks to complete their packet. There will be 2 reading logs attached as well).

A field trip form for the Museum of Art and History (MAH) went home today. This trip will take place on Friday, March 8 from 9-12:00. If you are interested in driving please sign the attached driver form. Also we are asking that each child bring in $2.00 to cover the cost of the admission.

On February 14, our class will have a low-key Valentine pass out. This will take place at the end of the day from 1:30-2:00. Feel free to stop by and say hello.

Have a great 3 day weekend!

Please send in pencils if you have any. We are running low:)

January 28 - February 1, 2013

Happy Sunday! Here are the updates for this upcoming week.

Book report for the Famous American is due this Friday, Feb. 1st. It was a 2 page packet sent home before Winter Break that consists of 1) The Title of the book 2) 5 interesting facts, and 3) a short 4-6 sentence summary about their chosen famous American. If your child needs a copy of this, please send me an email and I will be sure to send one home on Monday. A few students have already turned theirs in. Oral presentations will not be until the last week in March (right before Spring Break). Over the next few weeks, we will begin the writing process. Another letter explaining the project will be sent home in a few weeks. We wanted kids to get a head start and gather some information before we began trying to work on the presentations in class. I may be asking for additional volunteers during this time also. I'll keep you posted!

A "regular" spelling packet for Nights of the Pufflings will be due this Friday. We also finished up Geometry last week and are working on Chapter 12, division. Students who know their multiplication facts are understanding the concept easily. I have given them several ways to work it out (i.e. drawing arrays, picture groups, repeated subtraction, and fact families). Please encourage your children to use whatever method works for them.

That's all for now. Hope you are enjoying the beautiful day!

Wish list: Wipes and pencils :)

Jan. 22-25, 2013

Hope you are all enjoying a gorgeous 3 day weekend. I love when we have 70 degree weather in the middle of winter!

Anyway, it was great seeing all of the alert and smiling faces last week. Kids were energetic and jumped right back into the swing of things. With this being a 4 day week, a spelling review packet will go home Tuesday and is due on Friday. A spelling test on these review words will be on Friday as well. Students will have a quick 10 point quiz on solid shapes in math on Tuesday. We will then begin division (CH 12). I'm giving a multiplication quiz weekly now until the end of the school year. Students should continue practicing these facts thoroughly throughout the year.

Students also need to have a famous American book picked out by Jan 22. The attached book report will be due in early February. If you didn't receive this before winter break let me know and I will send a new one with your child.

Have a wonderful 3 day weekend!

January 14-18, 2013

Happy New Year everyone! I'd like to give a big THANK YOU to all the parents who gave me such wonderful gifts for Christmas. I felt the love this year! I have to say this is a great class and the kids truly reflect their parents' kindness. Thank you for all you do!

School will resume on Monday with our usual schedule. A spelling packet will go home for Abdul Gasazi and is due on Friday, Jan. 18. As always, please be sure the reading log is signed and homework is turned in on time. We will continue with multiplication and geometry in math.

Before Winter Break, a letter was sent home from the 3rd grade teachers describing our upcoming Famous American report. We were hoping some kids could get a head start and find a book to have read by January 20. It makes it easier when kids have some background knowledge about their chosen American before we begin the writing process. If your child hasn't chosen a person, please be sure they pick one soon. We would like all students to have a small summary about their Famous American by January 20. If you have any questions about this feel free to email me.

Enjoy the rest of your vacation! See you soon!
